UiB students and staff at UKZN, June/July 2018

This year’s Winter School at UKZN’s School of Built Environment and Development Studies (SOBEDS) (25.06-9.07.2018) was an opportunity for five students from the University of Bergen to increase their knowledge by following a masters module on the Political Economy of the Welfare State | Poverty and Sustainable Development.

Andrea Espenakk Osvoll, Maria Okyere Addo, Cahaya Ramadhani, Helene Karlsen and Elena Davanger are all master students at the Department of Health Promotion and Development (GLODE programme) at the University of Bergen.

Their participation in the Durban Winter School was made possible through scholarships awarded within the framework of this UTFORSK project. In addition to their studies, the students from Bergen were able to make new friends among the more than 30 UKZN students taking the same module and had a chance to learn more about the local area around Durban, including a course trip to the Nelson Mandela Capture Site.

During the first week of the Winter School, CROP Coordinator Maria Sollohub took the opportunity to visit UZKN project partners at the School of Built Environment and Development Studies (SOBEDS).

During her visit, Maria had meetings with administrative and academic staff at UKZN to discuss the next steps of the UTFORSK project and perspectives for the future.

A final visitor to SOBED’s Winter School was Wenche Dageid, Associate Professor at the Department of Health Promotion and Development at the University of Bergen. Wenche gave two lectures/seminars at the end of the course period; one on “Global Mental Heath and Agenda 2030 – Leaving No One Behind?“, and one on “Agenda 2030 – Prospects for Health and Equity”.

 

The SOBEDS Winter School at UKZN provided an excellent opportunity to strengthen the project partnership and pave the way for future activities. Oliver Mtapuri and his team were excellent hosts for the visiting students and staff from UiB.
